Brief introduction

Denzel was born on December 28, 1954 to Denzel Washington Sr and Lynne Washington, in Mount Vernon, Bronx, NYC.
Denzel Sr was a Pentecostal minister while Lynne was a beautician at a beauty parlor and both of them had a huge role to play in their son’s talent of performance. But neither of them, nor Denzel himself, had imagined that the boy would grow up to be one of the A list actors in Hollywood, winning 30 awards with over 60 nominations.

At the age of 14, Denzel was sent to boarding school. Soon after, his parents got divorced. Afterwards, Denzel lived with his mother and even though they had planned to send him to medical school, Denzel ended up in Fordham University to study journalism. This is when Denzel realized his love for acting, got his first gig in a TV movie called “Wilma” and met the love of his life Pauletta Pearson, who he later got married to.

Denzel graduated in 1977 and won a scholarship to American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco, and so his career life started and very soon, skyrocketed.

His role in St. Elsewhere

After his debut in Carbon Copy, Denzel played the role of Dr Philip Chandler in the hit series St Elsewhere for six whole years. The show earned him a lot of recognition and the series itself won 13 Emmy Awards as well a spot in the list of “50 best TV shows of all time” by TV Guide in 2002.

His portrayals of real-life personalities

Denzel played the role of Steve Biko, a South African anti-apartheid activist, in his movie “Cry Freedom”. He also played the roles of Muslim minister and human rights activist Malcolm X in “Malcolm X”, the role of football coach Herman Boone in his movie “Remember the Titans”, poet and educator Melvin B in “The Great Debaters”, the drug kingpin Frank Lucas in “American Gangster” and the role of boxer Rubin Hurricane carter in his movie “The Hurricane”. These characters earned him both positive and negative criticism from the audience but surely became a huge part of his successful acting career.

His insecurities

When Denzel first started acting, he wasn’t very fond of the gap he had between his front two teeth. In fact, this insecurity of his made him turn into a very serious and distant human being who kept people at a distance. Little did he know that people actually adored him for his handsome features.
Another “abnormality” in his physical appearance was his crooked pinky finger.
Denzel actually broke his right hand finger during a basketball game, never got it fixed and the bone healed in an unnatural position, leaving it crooked permanently. The finger is still bent to this day.
Because he had many insecurities growing up, a lot of Denzel Washington’s quotes are about being confident and secure in one’s self.

Denzel Washington was nominated for prestigious awards like the Oscars, Emmy and the Golden Globes, of which he won quite some of the nominations.

At last

Denzel has been and will be a true inspiration to actors from the color community and “imperfect” features. Denzel Washington’s quotes teach us that it’s not about one’s appearance when it comes to the art of performance. It’s about dedication, talent and hard work. His journey is a true testament to the idea that artists who work for art rather than fame and money reach the highest levels of perfection in their domain.
